Based on MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital Memory Cards
provide several enhancements. A new higher performance nine pin serial
interface provides a nearly four time increase in data transfers up
to 10 MBytes per second. Secure Digital cards also feature a mechanical
write protect switch to prevent accidental overwrites or erasure. Major
improvements in electrostatic discharge tolerances add increased data
protection. All of these improvements come with only a slight increase
in card thickness and weight, which allow for higher storage capacities.
Secure Digital cards retain MultiMediaCard's minimal power requirements,
making them ideal in low power, small form factor applications including
MP3 players, smart phones and digital camcorders.
Secure Digital cards include a proprietary cryptographic
security scheme for copyright enforcement, which entities with DRM interests
consider a 'feature.' Increased physical memory space coupled with flash
memory density improvements and die size reductions promise excellent
card capacity increases in the near future.
